20th Kiremko Night of Woerden, unlike any other

The 20th Kiremko Night of Woerden will be canceled this year. It is not realistic to organize such an event in October this year. It is the second time in the existence of the international cyclocross that an edition has been canceled, in 2006 in order to put all energy in the National Championship in the Molenvliet park of Woerden and now as a result of the Corona crisis. Main sponsor Kiremko has already announced that it will continue to respect the agreements made up to and including the 2024 edition. An investigation into a possible alternative program has started.

The organising commitee Stichting Wielerronde Woerden has taken the decision to cancel in consultation with the municipality of Woerden, the Royal Dutch Cycling Union (KNWU) and the main sponsors Kiremko and BluePrint Automation. The board came to this conclusion on the basis of a joint 'corona analysis', with a focus on health and safety, sports and sportsmanship, mobility and accessibility and a healthy financial basis for the future.

Chairman of the Stichting Wielerronde Woerden Arjan van der Horst "It is up to the board to organize a responsible event, unfortunately that is not possible this year and we will focus on the next edition in 2021".

“It is quite complicated to organize events in autumn, healthcare is paramount. I understand the choice of the board of the Kiremko Nacht van Woerden, I am especially sorry that this fantastic event with an international appearance cannot take place and I am looking forward to, I hope, 2021, ”said mayor Victor Molkenboer of the municipality of Woerden.

Arjan van der Horst: “The Kiremko Nacht van Woerden has grown into a very successful event in recent years thanks to the efforts of sponsors, suppliers, volunteers and riders. Together we organize an international cyclocross of which we are proud. We want to keep that standard high for the coming years. We are now investigating a possible alternative program later in autumn.

“Wise decision by the board,” says Paul Oosterlaken on behalf of main sponsor Kiremko. “At the moment, the health of the public and riders is far more important than our regional brand awareness. I hope to see exciting races again in 2021. ”

Lars van der Haar, five-time winner of the Kiremko Nacht van Woerden, is also very sorry. “I consider Woerden as my home race, after all I live relatively close by and I had put this race on my schedule” he says to continue with “I hope this beautiful event will come back just as strongly in the coming years”

The success of the Kiremko Nacht van Woerden is possible through the support of our sponsors. It would not be possible to arrange an event of this magnitude without them.

Many top riders again participate this year. The current list of participants can be found on the website of the KNWU.
